Low Back Pain Research

Did you know medical research supports spinal manipulation for low back pain? While a growing body of low back pain research and evidence supporting chiropractic and manual therapy interventions for musculoskeletal health exists, SPINE journal published this particular article three years ago in April of 2013.

Manipulation vs NSAIDs

This was the first study to investigate spinal manipulation in a double-blind, randomized control study design, the gold standard for medical research. The study evaluated 101 patients with acute low back pain (LBP). Researchers divided the participants into three groups, consisting of spinal manipulation, Diclofenac (a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug or NSAID), and placebo. The Evidence Based Chiropractor created the infographic below to visually represent the results of the study. Spinal manipulation proved clinically superior to both Diclofenac and placebo for treatment of acute low back pain. Researchers conducting the study concluded “manipulation can be recommended for the therapy for acute nonspecific LBP.”

Our chiropractors use a variety of manipulation techniques in addition to other manual therapies to treat low back pain. The following links contain more information about our spinal manipulation as well as other manual therapy techniques. At Elite Sport & Spine, our chiropractors proudly offer manipulation techniques learned from the Motion Palpation Institute (www.motionpalpation.org) in addition to techniques taught at Palmer and Logan chiropractic colleges. These techniques provide a biomechanically superior and evidence-based joint manipulation approach for our patients.
