Your First Chiropractic Visit At
Elite Sport & Spine
in Brookfield & Waukesha
Patients can sometimes be nervous the first time they see a new chiropractor or a chiropractor for the first time. We hope that providing a brief summary of what to expect on your first visit to our Brookfield chiropractors will alleviate some of the uneasiness associated with the initial visit, exam, and chiropractic treatment.
At Elite Sport & Spine, our board certified Brookfield chiropractors are thoroughly trained in the assessment and treatment of musculoskeletal injuries. They will perform a complete and thorough examination and evaluation of your individual condition to provide you the most accurate diagnosis and effective treatment plan possible.
Your first chiropractic appointment will include:
- New patient paperwork
- A history of your individual injury or condition
- Any necessary orthopedic and neurological tests
- Movement tests to identify the cause of your pain
- Discussion of your personal goals for health and recovery with the doctor
- An explanation of the treatment plan and techniques to be used
- Initial treatment
In some cases, the history of the injury and the findings of the examination will warrant diagnostic imaging (x-ray or MRI) or further testing be performed. In these cases, we refer out to imaging facilities or other health care providers to specialize in these areas.
The Elite Sport & Spine Way
Beyond the 1st Chiropractic Appointment
Most acute injuries that our Brookfield chiropractors treat require some level of follow-up and an individualize treatment plan to achieve full resolution. We describe our three phases to care as the Elite Sport & Spine Way. This process has been honed and perfected over 10+ years of clinical experience. The three phases are as follows: pain relief, injury resilience, and performance care.
1. Pain Relief
This phase can vary from patient to patient and condition to condition. Most people with acute injuries accomplish this phase within 2-6 treatments. Treatments are often closer together, likely 2-3 times per week, and designed to get you out of pain quickly so you can start building an injury resilient body!
2. Injury Resilience
Did you know the number one predictor of future injury is prior injury to that area? This phase is designed to make sure your injury doesn’t come back. Most of us have a “weak link” in our kinetic chain or the way we move. We often describe this using terms like a “bad back,” “bum knee,” or “weak ankle.” You can insert your injury-prone body part here. The goal of this phase is to bullet-proof your body. It will involve spacing appointment further apart, likely 1 time per week or 1 time every two weeks. In addition, you will have an individualized plan of exercises to perform targeted to your “weak link.”
3. Performance Care
This phase focuses on keeping the gains you’ve made and maintaining your desired level of performance. The frequency of these treatments depends largely on your preference. For some high level athletes, they want a tune-up a couple times every month. Others prefer treatments on a quarterly basis. It truly depends on your goals and a joint decision after a discussion between you and your doctor. Still others prefer to seek treatment only when they are experiencing chronic stiffness or the start of pain. While this isn’t what we recommend, it is certainly an option if you prefer.
